As this townhouse is not huge, Scott had to use his creativeness to
devise an 'outdoor room' - a barbeque, alfresco dining and entertaining
space to function as an extra living space.
To blend in with the townhouse, Scott selected a rust-coloured water
feature which he designed himself, brown Merbau decking,
aubergine-coloured slatted screens and red-wine glazed pots. These
features all function as important elements.
When planting out the area, Scott chose a combination of traditional
and modern plants. Architectural yuccas and strappy cordylines sit
alongside dwarf azaleas and English box. Magnolia Littlegems provide a
green lushness together with some potted herbs.
Scott also designed a system of adjustable lights specifically suited
to the alfresco living space, which adds an intimate and atmospheric
touch and allows the alfresco area to be used day or night.

The owners were looking to introduce some formality and structure to
the garden. They wanted some space for the kids to play, an area near
the pool for sunbaking and an attractive outdoor alfresco entertaining
area.
The design involved a new pergola, concrete paving around the pool, a
gently sloping lawn area and a terraced garden off to one side, along
with some clever design tricks to draw attention away from the
off-centre pool and palm.
This oasis is a drought-tolerant garden, cleverly
mixing modern plants such as agaves with more traditional ones such as
ornamental pears, abelias and lilly pillies.

Having created this client's
outdoor environment for their previous
home, their new home became Scott's next exciting challenge.
The
superbly-appointed kitchen/alfresco dining room 'floats' above the
generously proportioned swimming pool. The alfresco living room
overlooks the surrounding gardens, and captures the expansive views of
Port Philip Bay.
The
elegance of this splendid home has been extended in the design of the
pool, alfresco kitchen and dining room, and surrounding gardens. The
result is a picture in which all these elements blend seamlessly
together. The building can be fully opened to enjoy the summer days or
nights, or it can be partially or fully closed if the winds or weather
dictate it all without loosing the magnificent views and vistas.

This indoor-outdoor solution links the interior of the house with the
pool and back garden, which were previously separated.
The resultant
alfresco entertaining space extends the home out to the pool and
garden, and can be used during the day or night, at any time of the
year - thanks to the outdoor heating.
The
glass roofed atrium has been designed to allow light into the rear of
the home, whilst preventing the alfresco living area from over heating
in summer.
This
alfresco space is used almost every day and has recently served
admirably for an 18th birthday party. It will soon be host to a 50th
birthday celebration, during which the fully-stocked wine fridges will
be put to good use.
